Varna

General Information about Varna

Varna is the third largest city in Bulgaria and is located on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast in the north east of the nation. Varna is one of the major tourist attractions of Bulgaria and is commonly referred to as the summer capital of the country. Originally founded in 570BC, Varna is one of the oldest cities in Europe and is currently home to over 349,000 people.

Varna has many popular attractions and places of interest to visit such as the Varna Archeaological Museum, Roman Baths, the Battle of Varna Park Museum, The Sea Garden and the Aladzha Monastery. There are also many churches and cathedrals in Varna. The most frequented by visitors are Dormition of the Theotokos Cathedral, St Athanasius and St Petka Parashkeva Chapel. There are also three mosques and the ruins of some basilicas which are also becoming popular sites.

The Dormition of the Theotokos Cathedral is the largest Bulgarian Orthodox cathedral in Varna. This world famous cathedral was first opened in August 1886 after 6 years of construction. The Dormition of the Theotokos Cathedral was modelled after the temple in Peterhof and was designed by Odessan architect Maas. The cathedral was named Dormition of the Theotokos in memory of Russian Empress consort Maria Alexandrovna who had recently passed away.

The Varna Archeaological Museum is one of the largest and most famous museums in Varna. Founded in 1888, the museum is housed in a Neo-Renaissance style building which was originally used as a girls school. The Varna Archaeological Museum features numerous artifacts and objects from prehistoric, Thracian, Ancient Greek and Ancient Roman times of the cities history. The most famous exhibit in the museum is the Gold of Varna. Excavated in 1972, this is the oldest gold treasure in the world and dates from 4600BC. The Gold of Varna exhibition occupies three halls of the Varna Archaeological Museum.
