Smolyan which is thought to have been inhabited since the first or second millennium B.C is ideally located within the southern parts of Bulgaria at an altitude of 3,278 feet. Smolyan which is a town of the Smolyan Province is home to over 33,000 residents.

Nestled within the central parts of the Rhodope Mountains, Smolyan is fast becoming a popular destination for skiers and is located near the ever popular ski destination of Pamporovo.

Smolyan boasts a variety of historical buildings with some featuring architecture from the Ottoman period. Be sure to visit the Cathedral of Saint Vissarion of Smolyan as this Bulgaria's second largest chuch, which boasts eleven bells in total.
