General Information about Plovdiv

Bulgaria's second largest city of Plovdiv is the host of the Plovdiv Province within the southern part of Bulgaria. Split in two by the Maritsa river which is in fact the largest in southern Bulgaria. Often referred to as The City of the Seven Hills, Plovdiv is set atop seven syenite hills which a form of igneous rock.

If you are planning on visiting Plovdiv you will be in for a real treat as this historical city is one of the oldest in all of Europe and boasts numerous fascinating buildings and historical monuments. Plovdiv is also a city filled with culture and features a variety of art galleries, the famous Plovdiv Drama Theatre which dates back to 1881.

Be sure to find the time to explore through some of Plovdiv's fascinating monuments such as the Plovdiv Roman Amphitheatre which was originally built back in the 2nd Century A.D but was only recently discovered in 1970.

Thought to be the oldest and largest Eastern Orthodox monastery in Europe is the Bachkovo Monastery. A trip here will not disappoint. One of the best ways to learn about Plovdiv is by visiting the Plovdiv Regional Historical Museum as it is home to exhibitions dating backt o the 15th century right through to the 19th century.

You can get to Plovdiv through a variety of means of transportation with bus and train being the most popular. You can fly into Plovdiv, however the city's airport is considerably small.
