SalzburgGeneral Information about SalzburgSalzburg is the fourth largest city in Austria and is located on the banks of the Salzach River at the northern boundary of the Alps. In 1997 the entire city of Salzburg was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site as it is one of the best preserved German speaking cities in the world and features world famous baroque architecture. The area of Salzburg is believed to have been settled by humans since the Neolithic Age, with the first settlement began by Celts. In 700 Saint Rupert named the city Salzburg which translates to 'Salt Castle'. Salzburg has a population of over 150,000 people.
Salzburg is world famous for being the birth place of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the setting of the film The Sound of Music which tells the life of Maria Von Trapp and her family who lived in the city until fleeing from the Nazi's during World War II. There are many places of interest to visit in Salzburg but the most popular are those relating to Mozart and The Sound of Music film.
Mozart's birth house in the heart of Salzburg is one of the most famous attractions in the city. This is the house where the Mozart family lived and where the musician was born in 1756. The house has been transformed into a museum devoted to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his family. Also nearby is the former residence of the world famous musician.
Another popular sites in Salzburg is Nonnberg Abbey. This Benedictine monastery was founded in the early 700's by Saint Rupert of Salzburg and was where Maria Von Trapp taught and intended to become a nun before being sent to teach a member of the Von Trapp family, as depicted in the film The Sound of Music. One of the most popular activities to do in Salzburg is to go on a Sound of Music tour which explores many sites and places connected with the film and the Von Trapp family life.
